The Gospel according to Matthew 11:28

Welcome, friend, to the English-speaking congregation of the Contra Costa Gospel Church. Whoever you are, and whatever turnings you have made on the road of life, we know that you are not here by coincidence. God, Himself, has directed your footsteps here for His great purposes. We offer you the rest and refreshment of your soul, which come only from our Lord, Jesus Christ.

The reverent and joyful worship of God is our greatest obligation, our greatest pleasure, and our highest goal. Our English-language worship service is held on Sundays from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in the main sanctuary. Communion services are held on the first Sunday of every month.
Sunday School

Sunday school classes give instruction in the Bible and its life applications to all age groups from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.  If you are interested in attending a Sunday school class, please ask any member of the pastoral team who can direct you to the appropriate class.
Fellowship Groups

Our fellowship groups exist to meet the spiritual needs of our members that are not adequately met in the larger gathering of the whole church.  It is in these groups where we seek to share burdens with one another, experience the joys and sorrows of life together, pray together, study the Word of God together, and by so doing, exhibit the love and unity that might be a Christian witness to non-believers.

We currently have four fellowships in our English-speaking congregation:

  •     English Adult Fellowship (approximately 36+ years)
  •     Young Adult Fellowship (college grads to 35 years)
  •     Oasis Youth Fellowship (high school students)
  •     Junior High Fellowship (jr. high school students)

If you are interested in any of these ministries, please ask a member of the pastoral team to direct you to the leaders of these groups for more information.
Children Ministries

In our effort to minister to the entire family, we have several ministries tailored especially for young children.  On Fridays at church we have the AWANA Club (during the school year), which is a Bible club for children ages Kindergarten through sixth grade.  On Sundays, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. (during the English-speaking worship service), we have a separate childrens worship service in E-104.  Finally, during the Sunday school hour (11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.) we have several Sunday school classes for children of all ages.

If you have any questions or would like more information about our Childrens旧 ministries, please direct your questions to any member of the pastoral team who will put you in contact with the appropriate ministry leader.

History of Contra Costa Gospel Church

In 1975, a Chinese couple in Walnut Creek felt the need to start a Bible study in Mandarin.  A local American church generously allowed the Bible study the use of their church facilities.  Not having any biblical training, they invited from a nearby city two pastors that were professors in a seminary to teach.  The Bible study continued to grow until it became a church service.  As the church service grew even more, the facilities did not meet the needs of the new congregation.  In 1981, the congregation rented space from the Jewish Community Center and became Contra Costa Gospel Church. The name was chosen for two reasons. The church was to be a God-centered, Bible teaching body of believers that wants everyone to feel welcome regardless of ethnicity.

In 1988, the Contra Costa Gospel Church purchased and moved to the current location.  The service was mainly Mandarin, but sometimes it would be translated into English because there were many children who spoke English as their first language.  In 1990, the Mandarin congregation started an English worship service for the younger people.  An English-speaking minister was asked to pastor the new service.  In 1998, the English service changed its emphasis from just focusing on young people to ministering to a broader audience.

As the English-speaking ministry has continued to grow, so has its staff.  There are currently two individuals that minister to the needs of the English-speaking ministry.  Richard overseas all aspects of this ministry, while Eddie works mainly with the students.

Our Pastoral Team
Richard Yu, Pastor
Richard has been on staff at CCGC since 1998, mainly serving as the pastor for the English-speaking congregation.  However, because of his unique background and abilities, God has used him mightily in both language congregations.  He grew up in Taiwan and came to this country after his college studies.  After working for many years in the finance industry, he sensed God leading him towards pastoral ministry, at which time he began his seminary studies at Western Seminary while serving at CCGC.

Edward Cheng, Pastor
Eddie came to CCGC in 2002 to serve as the minister to students.  After growing up in Los Angeles, he came to the Bay area in 1994 for his college studies where he studied Molecular Biology with a dream of becoming a pediatrician.  However, God placed on his heart a burden to serve His people during his last year of college.  In 2000, after a series of family incidents, Eddie enrolled at Western Seminary in the M.Div. program.  After graduating from Western in 2003, Eddie began to serve at CCGC on a full-time basis.

For questions related to any of the ministries in this pamphlet, please feel free to contact any member of the pastoral team for further information.  You can reach them by calling the church office.
